Thanksgiving is the time of the year to gather with friends, family, and loved ones. However, while it’s a unique holiday, the celebration here at Castle View High School is very low-key. When asked if the students are going anywhere, or staying at home, 81 percent of the 251 people asked were staying at home.
“I usually stay home every year, mainly because it’s basketball season and I can’t miss a practice,” said Rorey Schmidt ‘16. “Plus, my family is always going off in different directions so it’s hard to plan a time to leave that works for all of our schedules.”
Even though this holiday is about being thankful for everything you have, mere hours after is Black Friday, which is sometimes looked forward to more than Thanksgiving. “It’s easier to stay home for Thanksgiving because then you can go to the mall right after and know where you are going. If you’re traveling it makes it much harder,” said Kori Baker ‘18.
Some travel to see their loved ones. “I am going to North Carolina to see my sister in college, I haven’t seen her in awhile so I’m looking forward to get the spend Thanksgiving with her,” said Nolan Laufenburg ‘17.
Thanksgiving Day should be remembered not just as a day when we give thanks for our abundance, but more deeply and historically why we have everything we do. Gathering with all of your favorite people and eating lots of delicious food is a foolproof and traditional way to celebrate the holiday.
