If last Monday when walking through the halls, school felt empty you are not wrong. A tradition that has been going on for centuries was playing out. The tradition where all seniors are invited to ditch school and go to a designated location.
Still, for CV this year it was the Chatfield where they decided to spend the day in the sun and keep the tradition alive.
Monday, April 22 is the day that students decided to be solely dedicated to ditching but specifically for Seniors as promptly named this is all through the idea that “they can’t suspend us all”.
Though this seems like a modern occurrence Senior Ditch Day did not just start this year as it has been happening for years. The tradition also emerged because the normal punishment of not being able to go to prom is taken away as it happens the weekend beforehand. In their article Sydney Nolan and
Kelsey Thorn state, “It’s important to remember that many of us face a season full of final projects and exams before we can enjoy the summer. Keep these deadlines in mind when deciding whether or not you’ll participate in Skip Day.” This is a good way to avoid having to play catch up for the rest of the year.
Though only seniors are intended to skip on this specific day, other students also choose to skip. This is because the event is unscheduled and nothing can stop these students from skipping on the same day with their Senior friends. This is all in defiance of the school’s staff and directory where participating in the tradition is not encouraged and will be punished as a routine absence. “We just want you to properly sign-ought properly and not ditch.” This is the admin response to the scheduled ditch and would be a preferable result rather than ditching.
