The Last Stride

A senior looking for state through this uncertain time

One more step! One more step! Hal Fotinos, a senior, climbs to the top of some challenging rocks on a nice afternoon. As he is climbing he is constantly thinking about what his next move should be in order to reach the top. “I am just looking to climb better than last year and make state. Making state has been a goal for a while and I hope that I can do it for my last season,”Fotinos said.

The rock climbing team at Castle View is a very competitive sport and one senior, Hal Fotinos, is a big part of the competitive edge. Fotinos is going into his last year at Castle View and has one goal in mind, to make state. While practicing a lot outdoors to prepare for the season Hal believes he is ready to make a mark on, not only the Castle View rock climbing team, but the state’s rock climbing reputation.

Question- What makes you most excited about this upcoming season?

Answer- I would say specifically to this year, probably that we are lucky enough to get one at all. A lot of schools and even other sports at our school didn’t get that opportunity due to Covid.

Question- Now that you are able to have a season what will be different about it?

Answer- For sure the masks during the climbs will be strange, but that is the only rule that I know 100%. The district has not released the guidelines for rock climbing yet.

Question- Is there anything from last year you are looking to improve on?

Answer- I am just looking to climb better than last year and make state. Making state has been a goal for a while and I hope that I can do it for my last season.

Question- What can you do to be good enough for state?

Answer- Basically you have to have a balance of being able to climb and lead and boulder problems to have a chance of qualifying.

Question- What do you think you need to work on specifically to be able to reach that level?

Answer- Exactly that. I have to get a little bit better at the balance of those things and I believe I can make it.
