Castle rock is a small town, so there’s not much room for a cross town rivalry without the schools bumping into each other. The girls soccer team this year knows this all too well.
With the benefit of the new recreation center in town, the Mac, training for soccer season with snow on the fields became much easier, and both teams wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. Castle View, however, booked their dates for practices earlier and gained the upper hand: the indoor turf field.
“We booked the MAC first, so it’s totally fair that we get the indoor field and they get the outside one. Plus, we’re paying for the indoor turf and the outdoor is public,” said Macy Boughn ‘18. “It’s all going to be worth it though because we are going to be in such good shape when we play them.”
Castle View’s team has available scrimmages open to all players on Mondays and Wednesdays after school. Douglas County’s team sometimes practices on Wednesdays. Even though the two teams aren’t practicing on the same turf, the rival team’s attendance in close proximity is a motivator for some of the players.
“I think it’s great that they’re there too because I think sometimes it pushes us harder, since our biggest competitors are there and we want to show that we are better than them,” said Jane Boyd ‘18. “It’s kinda funny that we get the indoor field so when it snows, they get to play in the freezing cold weather while we have fun indoors.”
For a small town, Castle View has a big rivalry. Despite sharing a field during preseason, by the time the big game rolls around each team will compete to claim the soccer field – and the town – as their own.
