JOSHUA HERMANSTORFER and HARRISON SEDMAK –
Castle View had its very own poetry slam hosted in room 8550 on Thursday, January 28th at 6:30 PM. Those who attended were treated to coffee and other snacks and goodies as they enjoyed listening to student poets as they recited their own original pieces. Along with the poetry readings, visitors were able to look at many art pieces produced by Castle View attendees.
“I enjoyed it much more than I expected!” said Senior Mallory Meeks. “A lot of people came and it was very fun to watch.”
Poems ranged from many different lengths and categories. To enter a poem, one had to pay a $5 entry fee which helped fundraise money for the school’s literary magazine.
Not only did students participate, but Sally Graham, who sponsored the event, entered her own piece as well.
At the end of the night, judges selected their favorite pieces. First, second, and third places received gift cards to Lost Coffee. The winner who received the first place prize of a fifteen dollar gift card was senior Anna Linenberg. She wrote a poem titled “Recess” which is based on her previous life experiences. Following her victory, she said, “I write about what I know, like events that I’ve experienced or remember from when I was a kid.” Though happy, she said that she was “surprised” about winning.
