Basketball-
The Castle View boys basketball team has been working since spring of 2015. They attended plenty of tournaments including one in Denver and an overnight camp in Fort Collins on the CSU campus.
Last year the Sabercats made it to the 5A playoffs, earning a first round home game against Fountain Fort Carson. It was the first time the Sabercats had ever had a home playoff game. Former player, Jontrell Herman hit a buzzer-beater to advance to the second round. The final score was 66-64. They later lost to the state champions, Overland High School. The Sabercats final record was 10-15 including four league wins.
Castle View lost key players, including Jontrell Herman (17.0 ppg), Caedon Davis (11.3 ppg) and Jake Langfeldt (11.2 ppg). Players returning are Jared Brack, Bayley McDermott, Phil Dalke, and Jake Ellis.
Senior, Jake Ellis is excited to take a leadership role for his last year of highschool. “This year we have a lot of chemistry on the court already,” Ellis said. “Now it’s just about that next man up mentality, I’m sure we won’t have a problem with finding players that want to shoot the ball.”
Practices are underway and some scrimmages have been completed. Games for the 2015-16 squad will begin on December 3rd at 7 p.m. at Grandview high school.
Ice Hockey-
The 2015-16 season for the Sabercat hockey team will be the inaugural season. Including Castle View, 5 different schools feed into the team. Chaparral, Legend, Ponderosa, Douglas Country, and of course Castle View. The team will be playing in the Peak Conference. Teams in this conference include Mountain Vista, Denver East, Heritage, Valor Christian, Lewis Palmer, Air Academy, Rampart, Liberty, Pine Creek, Doherty, Palmer, Coronado, Cheyenne Mountain, and Pueblo County.
Mountain Vista high school was the CHSAA feeder for ice hockey in Douglas County until Castle View came along.
The Sabercats home rink will be the Colorado Sports Center in monument Colorado for the 2015-16 season. 20 players comprise the varsity roster with 4 extras included in that 20.
Players from Castle View include:
Senior – John Conger
Senior – Hayden Wuthrich
Senior – Spenser Carothers
Junior – Jack Kane
Junior – Logan Mann
Freshman – Cormac Gorman
Freshman – Kyle McEntee
The Sabercats have their first ever game against the Pueblo County Hornets Dec. 5th at the Pueblo Plaza Ice Arena.
Wrestling-
“Hell Week” headlines the start of the Castle View wrestling season. It is the opening week of the season in which everything from conditioning, tactics, and other miscellaneous areas are covered.
The squad will have an interesting story to one of its wrestlers this year. 5’0”, 106 pounder Malik Heinselman will be entering his sophomore year and second year wrestling for the Sabercats. He made it as far as state last year but even more impressive qualified for the world wrestling tournament in Bosnia where he competed in August. Heinselman could have another outstanding year so he is definitely an athlete to keep an eye on.
Regular practice sessions are currently well underway.
The Sabercat wrestlers will have their first meet on December 18th at the Budweiser Events Center according to MaxPreps.
