In the past couple of years, Student Government has tried to keep Student Senate up and running at school, but they have struggled in the past. This year, things are going to be different, according to the members.
“We really want to make this Senate more legitimate and to unite the academies in our school more,” said Noah Gibbs ‘17.
To make this the year that keeps Student Senate functioning, representatives from each academy will lead the discussion on how they can help influence healthy competition between each academy.
“We are going to make the academies more involved in running Mad Week with a battle of the academies type of thing,” said Mason Blake ‘17. “We were also thinking that maybe the Senate members will head up the charity collection for their individual academies. We are in the process of throwing ideas around for the Senate to be more involved this year.”
The student academy representatives (Noah Gibbs: LGC, Delaney Schoenfeldt: VPA, Mason Blake: BHS, Casey Mcleod: STEM, and Megan Brown: Mosaic) are trying to get the attention of students and faculty who want to be involved in Student Senate. The process of gaining flexibility and approval from teachers for the Senate has been harder than they thought.
“We are in dire need of teacher support and involvement to bring back Student Senate, because this could be a very cool thing we do in school to unite the academies and bringing creativity out,” said Gibbs. “It’s just been so hard to start because of the mass amount of students we now have and how busy teachers are with their own students. Almost every class is full, so we can’t really find room to have our meetings and discussions. We are in no way giving up, we just need some support in the school.”
