Unlike previous year’s, Taste of the World presented itself with new foods, games, and entertainment.

One of the newest additions to Castle View’s most attended event was the Mexican Folkloric Dancing presented by our own CV students.

“It was a lot of pressure because we’re part of the school,” said senior Emely Cruz. “They don’t really know this side of us.”

Dancing along with Cruz was her sister, Kelly Cruz and best friend Laritza Bernal. Together, these girls have been dancing for about four years.

“We dance at many events,” said Cruz. “Mainly for Mexican Heritage Month, Cinco de Mayo and religious events.”

Before getting requested for events, the girls always knew they wanted to get a group together.

“I like entertaining and representing my roots,” said Emely.

Each of them attend practice about three times a week. Although it’s a lot of work they enjoy what they’re doing.

“It’s more like volunteer work,” said Kelly. “It helps me feel like I’m helping presence my culture.”

Performing for CV was definitely nerve racking stated Bernal.

“It was amazing to show our dances to the school and we got a lot of compliments,” said Bernal.

Spanish teacher Carol Godfrey helped arrange the dancers at Taste of the World.

“Godfrey was really proud and that makes us really proud,” said Bernal.

Overall, each of the performers enjoyed the event.

“Letting students at school experience something of an authentic culture outside of stereotypes was amazing,” said Emely.

Each also agree they’re going to continue to expand their culture by performing more.

“Lots of Mexican children born here neglect their culture,” said Bernal. “We’ll be able to pass this tradition on to our kids.”
