Freshman Catalin Varela is starting a magazine to help teenaged girls be more comfortable with the physical appearance of themselves and others — to teach young women status isn’t everything.
“There are hundreds of languages, but smiling is a universal sign of happiness,” said Varela, when asked about the title of the magazine, “The Smile in You.”
The magazine focuses on everyday life and living a healthy lifestyle, said Varela, who has big dreams for the future. She plans to publish every month and wants to eventually go statewide and nationally.
Sophomore Jordyn Wiese likes the idea of the magazine. “It will be something I can relate to,” she said.
English teacher Natalie Tunink, who is getting the word out with Varela, believes the magazine focuses on what should be important in a teenage girl’s life. “It’s about empowering girls . . . ,” Tunink said.
Since Varela only just started, she is still trying to push the magazine off the ground. If you are interested in being a writer for “The Smile In You,” contact Varela at [email protected].
