Across the main interstate from Castle View is the only other 5A high school in Castle Rock. The Douglas County Huskies have been cross-town rivals ever since CV became a high school in 2005. For years, the Huskies got the better of the Sabercats when it comes to football. This translates into renewed bragging rights for the winning team every year.
Friday, October 9th marked the 10th annual matchup between the rivals. The Sabercats had yet to win a game (0-5) and the Huskies (1-4) entered with one victory against Arvada West. As anticipated, much hype led up to the game. Social media contained a lot of excitement and each school had spirit days during the week. A sea of red filled the south stands as a mass of purple opposed in the north.
The first quarter saw no scoring by either team, but the atmosphere did not deteriorate as each student section and the cheerleaders were highly involved.
Duncan Swanson of the Huskies gave his team a field goal to put the first points up on the board. It was 3-0. By halftime, the Sabercats scored a touchdown and nailed the PAT to go into the locker room winning 7-3.
The energy inside the CV locker room was one of focus. Each coach was instructing players, who responded confidently to every correction. Both teams took the field for the last half after time away from the hectic nature of the rivalry.
The Sabercats owned the 3rd quarter, to the CV faithfuls’ delight, scoring two touchdowns and bringing the score to 21-3 heading into the fourth quarter. DC was on the attack in the last minutes of the game and made a desperate run to catch the Sabercats. They were able to put up 15 points but it was not enough. The game would end 21-18, Sabercats.
This marked the first time in history that the Sabercats won the football matchup against the Huskies.
Running/Full Back Curtis Edwards ‘17 had a standout game verse his team’s rivals,
“This was the first game where I got to play a lot and it was great having my whole team out there,” said Edwards. He finished with 18 carries for a total of 170 yards (MaxPreps). “It was a rough atmosphere to play in with all of the screaming and it was pretty physical on that field, but we came through,” said Edwards.
Castle View started senior Trenton Rohman as their quarterback, who played the whole game and threw for a touchdown in the second half.“I’m just glad we got the win; it’s the first time we’ve beat DC,” said Rohman. He also said he liked how the student sections were more focused on giving their team support then jeering at each other.
For the first time, CVHS could proudly say they beat Douglas County in football and will keep those coveted bragging rights until the two teams square off again in the 2016 season.
